Unesa.ac.id., SURABAYA-Action of environmental care is again shown by new students (freshmen) in PKKMB Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Surabaya State University (UNESA). They poured eco-enzyme in Lake Ketintang Campus on Friday, August 25, 2023.
There were about 60 liters of eco-enzyme with a mixing ratio of about 2.5 milliliters of eco-enzyme liquid per 1 liter of water poured by freshmen, BEM members and FMIPA community members in the lake.
Vice Dean for Learning, Research, and Community Service, Student Affairs, and Alumni, Prof. Rooselyna Ekawati, Ph.D., said this activity not only talks about climate change, but also acts to create a positive impact on the environment.
This concrete step not only provides practical lessons to new students about the importance of environmental conservation, but also invites them to be part of the solution in facing global challenges.

“We also provide other small actions such as reducing plastic waste by always bringing a beverage container or Tumbler. This is very simple but has a big impact if it becomes a habit of many students,” he explained.
He added, eco-enzyme is a solution or multifunctional liquid produced through a fermentation process from a mixture of organic waste such as fruits, vegetables, and others. Pouring this substance in lake water has many benefits, including purifying and breaking down harmful substances in the water.
In other words, the substance can act as a pest killer as well as a fertilizer. “Eco-enzyme can accelerate the normalization of pH levels in lake water that is a reservoir from various sources. This substance contains active enzymes derived from processed microorganisms,” he explained.
In the same place, Prof. Nadi Suprapto, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D., Director of Ranking Innovation and Scientific Publication said this action has a positive impact in supporting UNESA in the ranking of world-class universities (WCU) through THE Impact Ranking assessment.
The focus of the assessment is on the 6th and 13th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators, which focus on water resources and facing the challenges of climate change. “This action is also sustainable with the action in the UI Greenmetrics ranking which focuses on commitment to respond to environmental issues,” he explained.

This movement is also expected to have a positive effect in educating and inviting the entire UNESA academic community to pay more attention and care for the environment. By inviting all elements to be actively involved in water conservation and climate change mitigation efforts, a collective awareness of the urgency of environmental protection is expected to be formed.
“In addition, the campus environment is also considered an ideal place to practice sustainability values, which in turn can inspire positive actions outside the campus environment,” he concluded.
This activity involved BEM FMIPA. The Chairman of BEM, Ahmad Hilmi Ulin Naja, said that this environmental action does not stop at PKKMB, but continues with individual awareness. The culture of protecting other environments such as throwing garbage in its place, turning off electrical facilities if not used, and others must also become a habit embedded in all students. [*]
