SMCC Commemorates World Mental Health Day with International Seminar

Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA-Subdirectorate of Mitigation Crisis Center (SMCC) of Surabaya State University (UNESA) held an International Seminar at the Auditorium, 11th floor, Rectorate Building, Campus 2 Lidah Wetan, Surabaya on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
The activity which was held in commemoration of World Mental Health Day (October 10, 2024) was attended by UNESA partners, lecturers and students.
The seminar was opened by Vice Rector II for Law, Governance, Finance, Resources and Business, Bachtiar Syaiful Bachri. According to him, today's social dynamics are a challenge for the mental health of young people, including students, which must be a common concern.
“Therefore, this activity is very important as a concrete step to strengthen the mental health of the younger generation. Hopefully this is not for ourselves, but it will be a spirit to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining mental health,” he said.

In addition to commemorating World Mental Health Day, this event strengthened SMCC UNESA's commitment to improving the quality of mental health of Indonesia's young generation. One of the efforts is to collaborate with Menur Hospital, Surabaya.
Director of Menur Hospital, Vitria Dewi, conveyed the urgency of collaboration with SMCC UNESA. She revealed that the youngest age in Menur Hospital who experienced mental disorders was 10 years old.
Adolescents aged 18-24 years experience the most mental health disorders caused by several factors, one of which is breaking up with a lover. “Every day we cannot be separated from stress, so we need stress management in this case we need to collaborate with SMCC UNESA,” he explained.

This international seminar presented a number of speakers, one of whom was Retno Tri Hariastuti as Head of Academic SMCC. The UNESA counseling lecturer presented the material 'My Mental Health, My Academic Light.'
She mentioned statistics that 1 in 4 teenagers have a tendency to end their lives. “We often listen to advice to think positively without any action. It is better to do positive actions in addition to positive thinking,” he explained.
There are several characteristics of people with good mental health, such as psychological well-being. “People who are mentally healthy are those whose lives are effective,” he said.

Dr. Sang Min Lee from the Department of Education from the University of Korea delivered material on stress and emotional regulation. According to him, stress is caused by excessive pressure received by individuals, which is then referred to as a stressor, and results in stress or strain.
He mentioned that the work environment, college environment, and social environment have the potential to cause stress. For example, when employees are given a heavy workload with little pay or students are given an excessive task load outside of lecture hours, it is prone to causing stress.
Brigadier General of Police, Awang Joko Rumitro, Chairman of the East Java Provincial BNN on that occasion invited students not to abuse drugs, because it can affect mental health.
Taking drugs has various characters and the most severe is bipolar. “Don't ever try, for whatever reason. Because if you dare to try, it means you are risking your future,” he said.
