Collaboration between UNESA, Tirto.id, and Bank Jago: Equipping Students with Financial Literacy and Storytelling Skills through Data

Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-The Tirto class entitled “Telling Stories Through Data” was held at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol), Surabaya State University (UNESA) Campus 1 Ketintang, on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
This activity is part of Tirto.id's roadshow with Bank Jago, which aims to increase students' understanding of data journalism and financial literacy.
The event began with remarks from the Vice Dean I of UNESA's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Harmanto, who expressed his appreciation for Tirto.id's initiative in providing additional insights to students.
“We hope this activity can inspire students to be more critical and innovative in utilizing data as a basis for decision making,” he said.
One of the important moments in this event was the signing of a cooperation agreement between Tirto.id, Bank Jago, and UNESA.
The signing is expected to strengthen collaboration in the field of data-based journalism, research, and internship programs for UNESA students.
There were two speakers who attended this event, namely Edo Velandika, Consumer Business Community Manager of Bank Jago, and Dwi Ayuningtyas, Business Editor of Tirto.id.
Edo Velandika opened the panel discussion with a presentation on healthy personal finance management through the principles of record, separate, allocate, and evaluate.
“This principle can help us manage our finances wisely and planned,” he said.

Dwi Ayuningtyas shared insights on the importance of data as a key pillar in the preparation of quality news.
With accurate data, she emphasized, the media can help the public understand complex issues in depth, increase literacy, and empower people to make better decisions.
Next, in the workshop session, Fina Nailur from Tirto.id's research team led a training on data journalism. In this session, she explained how data can be used to create more credible and impactful news.
Fina also provided practical tips on finding and analyzing data to reveal facts that are rarely noticed in conventional news. “Data can be a powerful story when processed carefully and correctly,” she said.
Safira Mushollia, a UNESA student majoring in media management, felt that the material presented was very relevant to her studies.
This activity can increase students' understanding of how data is used in delivering accurate and impactful information.
“I see it as very relevant for all students who want to understand more about data-based communication. This is not only useful in the field of journalism, but also in other fields that require data analysis and interpretation,” he said.[*]
