The UNESA Department of Communication Studies and Gender Center Equip Students with Pro-Victim Perspective News Writing Skills

Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—News narratives about cases of violence or bullying can influence public views and even stigma towards perpetrators, and even towards victims. Therefore, news is not only required to be balanced, but also wise and pro-victim.
It is the skill of writing news from a pro-victim perspective that was given to communication students through a guest lecture at the Department of Communication Studies, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol) in collaboration with the UNESA LPPM Gender Center on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
The guest lecture was themed "Writing News with a Pro-Victim Perspective" which was delivered by two speakers, namely Eben Haezer, a Surya journalist, and Putri Aisyiyah R.D., a UNESA Communication Studies lecturer.

Putri Aisyiyah explained that this guest lecture is part of an effort to respond to the dynamics of the world of journalism lately. News is not born from a vacuum, but can be a tool to voice the voices of those who are less heard.
Or in the context of violence, news can be a tool to advocate for victims or survivors. This course is to equip students who are taking basic journalism courses, who are expected to be able to make pro-victim perspective news.
Sjafiatul Mardliyah, Head of the Center for Gender and Child Studies, said that activities like this are important as a means of education and socialization towards siding with marginalized or vulnerable groups.

This can be an additional competency for students besides what they get in class.
She continued, the Gender Center will choose special materials that highlight the gender, equality, social-inclusion side, which carries global themes.
"This is important for students to understand. However, between global, national and local conditions it must be linear. Understanding of this must reach the community and students," she said.
With this guest lecture, it can be a provision for students on how to build perspectives in responding to various phenomena in society. In addition, they can also gain new insights on how to deal with things like violence, for example.[]
