UNESA's Literacy Center Opens Assistance Services for Children, Individuals with Disabilities, and Elderly, Involving Students (Sarasi)

SURABAYA—The State University of Surabaya (UNESA) through the Literacy Center, Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) provided training to student literacy volunteers or Sarasi, in the Meeting Room on the 6th floor, LPPM Building, UNESA Campus 2 Lidah Wetan, Thursday, October 31, 2024.
Sarasi consists of students, preferably at least semester 3 who have undergone training and passed the selection. "Students who become literacy friends will get benefits such as: profit in the form of funds (coins) and SKS recognition (points). This SKS recognition is carried out according to the existing guide book," said the Head of the Literacy Center, Kisyani Laksono.
In the training, students received a number of materials including; Myths and Misconceptions of Literacy, Reading Aloud, Psychological Characteristics (Children, Elderly, and Children with Disabilities), Building Effective and Positive Communication in various conditions with Children, Elderly and Children with Disabilities, and Building Effective and Positive Interaction with Children, Elderly, and Children with Disabilities.
Through Sarasinesa, students and lecturers who care about literacy, arts, sports, and mental health are empowered to participate in the community.
This program also makes it easier for students who have difficulty finding independent internships. "With the presence of Sarasinesa, students not only help the community but are also able to develop themselves and apply the knowledge they gain in college," said the UNESA professor.
Sarasi is a service as a solution to meet the needs of the community in various aspects, ranging from childcare, elderly assistance, to additional lessons and skills development.
This program presents paid services involving students with special skills who come directly to homes or destinations, assisting in daily activities to providing intensive guidance.
Sarasi offers students the opportunity to practice their skills. The services provided by 'Sarasinesa' include several main categories.
First, Temanmainesa, which is specifically designed as a playmate for children, as well as sports skills training to improve children's motor skills.
Second, Temancerita, which offers companion services for the elderly or patients at home or in hospitals, providing emotional and social support through light conversation or interesting stories.
This activity helps the elderly stay connected and feel valued in their social lives.
"Meanwhile, the types of Sarasi programs include family literacy, sports literacy, subject literacy, language and cultural literacy, art literacy, school literacy, literacy to mental health literacy," he said.[]
