Bilingual Pop-up Book, Disaster Education Media Innovation by UNESA Students

Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA—The rainy season is approaching. Flood problems haunt residents in various areas. One of the areas frequently affected by floods is Pesawahan Village, Porong District, Sidoarjo.
According to a survey conducted by the Student Creativity Program (PKM) team at UNESA, floods there impact various aspects, causing traffic jams and disrupting students' learning activities at school.
"The flood problem is related to many factors, including infrastructure such as drainage and waste issues. Therefore, we believe it is essential to educate on clean and healthy living and environmental behavior, as well as flood disaster mitigation from an early age for students," said Anik Kurnia Ningsih, the team leader.
To provide education and mitigation, Ningsih and her friends designed an educational medium called "Gappina". This medium takes the form of a book, but it is different from ordinary books.
Gappina is a pop-up book equipped with an audio box with bilingual language to familiarize children with hearing and speaking foreign languages.
Moreover, to enhance interaction with users, this book is equipped with interactive games and a flip flop book concept that can support disaster mitigation education.
According to Ningsih, this innovation is tailored to the characteristics of children's growth and development, which constantly change, including physical-motor, cognitive, socio-emotional, language, and religious morals.
"This book is made with eco-friendly principles using materials such as recycled paper and natural glue from mangrove waste," she explained.

The supervising lecturer, Kukuh Arisetyawan, S.Pd., M.E., explained that his students' innovation was based on the essential need for flood disaster mitigation education in schools.
The pop-up book contains information on flood risk reduction, disaster risk maps and evacuation routes, and standard operating procedures for dealing with disaster emergencies.
"Education with such interesting and comprehensive media is not yet available in schools. It is hoped that this can stimulate behavior change from an early age, especially in anticipating and dealing with emergency disaster conditions," he said.
The pop-up book innovation developed by Anik Kurnia Ningsih, Baiti Ridillah Rizkika Tania, Nur Lailatul Fitriyah Abidin, Binti Eka Zulaikah, and Nadya Desi Aulia passed the PKM with the title "Prepared for Disasters through an Eco-Friendly Bilingual Noisy Pop-Up Book Equipped with Interactive Games at SDN Pesawahan Sidoarjo."
